Heart Institute of the Caribbean - 3k Walk

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cardiovascular disease is responsible for one-third of all global deaths (about 17 million people each year. According to the WHO, “undetected billions are at high cardiovascular risk ... due to hypertension, diabetes, high lipids, tobacco use, physical inactivity and unhealthy diet". In Jamaica and most of the Caribbean, cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death, disability and hospitalization and accounts for a major portion of local and overseas health care spending. Every year, approximately 56% of Hospital Deaths in Jamaica are attributed to Cardiovascular Disease.
Each and every one of us has either been affected by this disease or knows someone who has been. So come join us on Sunday, March 25, 2007 in spreading awareness of Cardiovascular Disease and the benefits of exercise as a preventative measure.
The Walk will begin at HIC’s main campus, 23 Balmoral Avenue, Kingston 10, and end at same (see route below). On the day of the walk, the Heart Institute of the Caribbean will be offering free cardiac screening which will include an ECG starting at 1p.m. The walk itself will officially start at 3:30p.m. Walk gear (T-Shirts, Squeeze Bottles) and refreshments will be provided and there is no registration fee to participate. Gym instructors form Spartan and Gymkhana will also be doing various exercise routines at intervals throughout the walk.
Major sponsors of the walk include Cari-Med Ltd., Merck Sharp & Dhome, Tyco Healthcare and Medtronic, Inc. Other sponsors include ProCare, Gleaner Company Ltd. and Deluxe Ambulance Service who will provide emergency services for the event.
